Wide-Open Spaces: Capturing the Grandeur of the Southwest
Robert W. and Amy T. Barker, and Milton and Gloria Barlow galleries (lower level)
September 17, 2010 through August 20, 2011

The early twentieth-century artists who painted the impressive mountains and expansive vistas of the American Southwest all came from other places. Their previous experience and training in less dramatic landscapes did not fully equip them for the challenges of painting in this open, wild land. This exhibition explores how they developed new approaches in color, composition, and technique to capture the grandeur of the region. The exhibition will include impressive works from the BYU Museum of Art collection together with outstanding selections from the Diane and Sam Stewart Art Collection.
