Dubbed “the last leading man” by
The New York Times, Tony Award Winner Brian Stokes Mitchell sings Broadway standards and classics from the American songbook. A consummate actor and musician, he created the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the original cast of
Ragtime. Other Broadway roles include the starring role of Don Quixote in
Man of La Mancha, Fred Graham/Petruchio in
Kiss Me, Kate, and
Jelly’s Last Jam (replacing Gregory Hines). Local audiences recognize him as the guest soloist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s annual Christmas concert in Salt Lake City in 2008.

Tony Award Winner Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a spectacular career that spans Broadway, television and film as well as performances in the great American concert halls. His Broadway roles include the starring role of Don Quixote in
Man of La Mancha (Tony nomination), as well as
Kiss Me, Kate (Tony Award),
Ragtime (Tony nomination),
King Hedley II,
Kiss of the Spider Woman,
Jelly’s Last Jam (replacing Gregory Hines) and David Merrick’s
Oh, Kay! He has also starred at City Center’s Encores in
Do Re Mi,
Carnival and
Kismet.
In 1998 Stokes made his Carnegie Hall debut with Audra McDonald in the televised
Gershwin’s 100th, with the San Francisco Symphony. Since then, he has performed there numerous times, most notably in
South Pacific and at his own sold-out solo debut. For three years in a row, he has starred in
South Pacific,
Les Miserables and
Guys and Dolls at the Hollywood Bowl Summer Series. He has appeared in concerts at Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood, Ravinia, Radio City and The White House. An extremely versatile singer, he has worked with John Williams, Dianne Reeves, Frederike von Stade, Reba McIntyre, Barbara Cook, Denyce Graves, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Big Band, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Muppets.
A familiar face in Washington, D.C., he has performed for Presidents Obama and Clinton and has become a staple at the PBS July 4th and Memorial Day concerts from the Capitol lawn. Stokes has been a frequent guest at the Kennedy Center and appeared in the title role of
Sweeney Todd at the tremendously successful Sondheim Celebration in 2002.
His long television career began with a seven year stint on
Trapper John, MD. More recent film and TV appearances include recurring roles and guest appearances on
Ugly Betty,
Frasier,
Crossing Jordan, PBS’
Great Performances, and DreamWorks’
The Prince of Egypt. He has appeared on more than a dozen albums including his own critically acclaimed eponymous solo CD.
