Legend, tradition, and celebration have driven people to sing and dance since the beginning of time. The International Folk Dance Ensemble (IFDE) honors these rich traditions from myriad cultures throughout the world.
The group's most recent production,
Reflections, will be seen in Nauvoo, Illinois, this summer.
We can see ourselves reflected in our traditions. Using vibrant costumes true to the cultures represented, exciting choreography, and great music from their live band, this group takes its audience on an around the world celebration in an hour and a half.
This showcase consists of dances from an array of cultures, including Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America. Their repertoire includes many unique pieces such as exotic Indian dances, harmonic Croatian songs, and Hungarian men’s slapping dances.
Since 1964, IFDE has toured all over the world, representing the United States and American folk culture. The group has become internationally famous at the most prominent folk dance festivals abroad, where they perform with many of the best dance companies from throughout the world.
Their most recent tour to China and Hong Kong in May of 2009 was a resounding success. The tour included 10 cities in mainland China plus Hong Kong. The group was involved in Arts Festivals, charity fund raising, and national TV tapings reaching audiences well into the millions.
Domestically, the ensemble has toured nearly all 50 states over the past 50 years. Internationally, they have traveled to more than 100 countries representing the U.S. with their international show, as well as being the American show at the largest folk festivals across the globe.
The International Folk Dance Ensemble originates in the Department of Dance of the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. BYU is one of the nation’s largest private universities with an enrollment of 30,000 students from throughout the United States and 110 foreign countries.
